For the Love of Pickles and Blending Wine

Dave Beck

Marcus Latham is the co–founder of The Pickle Plan. He shares why he loves being involved in every step of the food making process, even if it involves staying up all night jarring pickles. Then, a UW professor looks to the ancient past to find clues about global warming.

At 2:05 p.m. – For the Love of Pickles

Pickles don't grow in jars. But, if you only get food from the grocery store, you may never know how your dill classics got on those shelves. Marcus Latham is the co–founder of the local company The Pickle Plan. By day, he's a plastics engineer. But, after work, he pulls on a pair of rubber gloves and stays up all night turning 600 pounds of cucumbers into pickles. For years, he's looked for ways to take food from it's natural state to final dish. So, when a friend invited him to prepare pork chops, he was ready for what that entailed.

At 2:20 p.m. – Under a Green Sky

The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the scariest climate change research. University of Washington paleontology professor Peter Ward uncovers the chilling details of how global warming spurred massive extinctions throughout the geologic record in his new book, "Under a Green Sky". In an archive interview from May 15, 2007, he takes Megan Sukys into the ancient past for a vision of what the future may hold.

At 2:40 p.m. – Sounds Familiar

Amanda Wilde, host of The Swing Years and Beyond, brings us another familiar song we didn't know we knew so well.

At 2:50 p.m. – Blending Wine, Blending Business Styles

In 1994, farmers first planted lavender on the Olympic Peninsula. The region is now considered "the lavender capital of North America." Just last year, a climatologist conducted a study of the Peninsula for growing wine grapes on the land. Now, wine growing is increasing in the region as well. Kathy Charlton is the co–owner of Olympic Cellars in Port Angeles. Today, Kathy tells Jeremy Richards how she's bringing the lavender and the wine together.
